HIFU — Ultherapy

Focused ultrasound heats the deep lifting layer of the face to gently tighten and lift over months.

Worth it?

3/5

Real but modest. Roughly 1 in 3 people see little change. Worth it for mild sagging if you accept subtle results and a high price; disappointing if you expect a facelift.

How it works

High-intensity focused ultrasound delivers tiny points of heat at set depths, including the muscle-like layer (SMAS) that surgeons tighten in a facelift. The skin surface is untouched. The heat contracts tissue and triggers new collagen over 2–6 months.

How it feels

Deep, bony, aching zaps, strongest along the jawline and forehead. Many clinics give painkillers or numbing; some people find it very painful.

HIFU — Ultherapy downtime — and is it worth it?

How much downtime: Low — Usually none. Mild redness, swelling or tenderness for a few days; occasional temporary numb or bruised spots.

Cost for that downtime: $2,000–$5,000 full face and neck, 1 session, repeated every 1–2 years.

Is it worth it? Our verdict (3/5): Real but modest. Roughly 1 in 3 people see little change. Worth it for mild sagging if you accept subtle results and a high price; disappointing if you expect a facelift.

Benefits & realistic results

  • Mild lift of brows, jawline and under-chin
  • Firmer-feeling skin
  • No cuts and no visible downtime

What it can't do

  • Replace a facelift for heavy sagging
  • Fix pigmentation or surface texture
  • Give instant results

Risks & side effects

  • Pain during treatment

  • Rare nerve irritation causing temporary muscle weakness
  • Fat loss or hollowing if placed badly (operator-dependent)
